1kV 22nF ceramic capacitor for vehicle on-board chargers

Samsung 1kV 22nF MLCC

CL32C223JIV1PN# (yes, there is a # in the part number) is aimed at CLLC resonant power supply topologies and is constructed with a COG dielectric.

Operation is across -55 to +125°C and it has a ±5% tolerance.

Packaging is a 2.5mm tall 3.2 x 2.5mm surface mount 1210 (‘3225’ metric).

“MLCCs specified for use in battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles must be of quality construction and operate at high voltages to ensure reliable charging of the traction battery by the on-board-charger,” according to Samsung. Multi-layer ceramic capacitors, rather than plastic film capacitors, are the preferred choice for distributed capacitance because of their ability to withstand high  temperatures.”

CLLC converter from Infineon app noteCLLC converter?

A CLLC converter has a two full bridges of switching transistors, one at each end, linked by a transformer through two series-resonant LC networks, again one at each end.

The transformer ensures galvanic isolation between the ends and, with appropriate control, the converter can be bi-directional and step-up or step-down in either direction.

Find the CL32C223JIV1PN# product page here (clicking on ‘specsheet’ yields the most detailed information).

The CLLC converter diagram is from this Infineon application note that describes an 11kW silicon carbide PSU.

For the curious, Virginia Tech has created a three-phase CLLC converter that is well worth a look.
